Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) transmissions utilize digital technology.  There are 5 satellites utilized by DirecTV in geo-synchronous orbit about 22,300 miles above the earth that transmit DirecTV's digital broadcasts down to the earth's surface.  A satellite dish is used to capture the information transmitted by these satellites.  The programming is then decoded by the satellite receiver (set top box) and sent to the television.
